For homeware and lifestyle retailers, standard shopping bags may not provide enough space for larger products. Custom large paper bags offer a practical way to package these items while presenting a consistent brand image.
But when a bag becomes larger, there is more to consider than its dimensions. The paper, handles, construction and printed design all need to work together.
At YTS Packaging, one customer project shows how physical sampling can help turn these concerns into a confident purchasing decision.

Three Large Sizes, One Full-Color Design Project

Through our packaging business, we regularly work with international shipping companies. One of these companies introduced us to a customer in the Southern Hemisphere who operated a homeware and lifestyle business.
The customer needed custom paper bags in three unusually large sizes, each featuring full-color printed artwork.
During our discussions, the customer was confident that we could produce the required dimensions. Their main concern was the printing: how would the colors and patterns look on the finished bags?
For a project like this, a digital preview alone could not answer every question. We recommended making physical samples so the customer could inspect the actual bags before proceeding.
After discussing the details and receiving the sample payment, we produced the samples and shipped them to the customer. Soon after receiving them, the customer approved the bags and confirmed that they wanted us to handle the order.
The samples gave them something concrete to assess—the size, feel, construction and printed appearance of the packaging.

What Matters When Customizing Large Paper Bags?

If you are sourcing oversized paper bags for your store, the following details deserve attention before production.

1. Match the Paper to the Product

A large bag should have enough structure to present your products well and withstand its intended use.
For a structured white-card paper bag, 250–300 gsm can be a useful starting point for discussion. However, this is not a universal requirement for every material. Kraft paper and other paper grades perform differently, and paper weight alone does not determine carrying strength.
Tell your supplier what the bag will hold, including the approximate product weight. This helps them recommend suitable paper, construction and reinforcement.

2. Check the Handles and Bottom Construction

Large products are not always heavy, but heavier items place more stress on the handles and base.
Handle attachments, the folded top and the bottom construction should be considered alongside the paper itself. Depending on the product, additional reinforcement may be appropriate.
When checking a sample, place your intended products inside and assess how the bag feels when carried.

3. Position Your Branding Clearly

A large paper bag offers generous space for branding, but visibility still depends on placement.
A centered logo in the upper or middle section can be a good starting point. Check its position against the handles, top fold and overall artwork so it remains clear on the assembled bag.
For full-color patterns, consider how the design continues across the front, back and side panels.

4. Keep Important Artwork Away from Folds

Logos, slogans and essential text should sit clear of cutting edges, folds, gussets and glued areas.
The correct safe margins depend on the bag’s construction and production template. Ask for a dieline before finalizing the artwork, rather than applying the same margin to every bag size.

5. Confirm the Printing Method and Sample Process

The printing method should suit the artwork, quantity, paper and unfolded sheet size.
Offset printing is often considered for larger full-color orders. Digital printing may be suitable for some samples or short runs, depending on the equipment and material.
Ask whether the sample will use the same printing process and materials planned for production. If there are differences, clarify what the sample can confirm before approving it.
